Sat Aug 22 · 3:05 PM ET Gameday — the cards are live, and this page's job for the week is done. The slate it previewed split in half: the noon and 1:00 games (including Buffalo–Cleveland and the Sanders first half tracked here since Wednesday) kicked off before the card was written, so the published card covers the six night games only. The Week 2 tell mostly resolved the way the convention promised — but unevenly: Cincinnati and New England announced full rest, Arizona lost Beck to ribs and rested Brissett, Kansas City confirmed a three-way quarterback split, and Tampa Bay is playing Mayfield with Godwin as the No. 1. The most useful discovery of the day wasn't an announcement at all:
the open-to-consensus line moves told the playing-time story hours before any beat writer did — Minshew +22, Nussmeier +19, Mayfield −17. That observation is now on the card, and it belongs in the method. The
preseason card,
WNBA card and
MLB moneyline board are all live; grading lands with the next morning run. This page is retired to the archive with every entry intact — including the two that were wrong.
Thu Aug 20 · 8:31 AM ET Week 2 starts tonight, not tomorrow, and the tell this page has been waiting on begins in about twelve hours. Las Vegas at Houston kicks off tonight at 8:00 PM ET and San Francisco at the LA Chargers at 10:00 PM ET. Yesterday's entry said "Thursday is now tomorrow"; it is now today. Those two games are the first live evidence of whether the "Week 2 is the starters' week" convention is actually holding this year, and they resolve before Friday's three games and long before Saturday's card is written. If first-team units get a half tonight, every line on the Saturday board is priced off the wrong assumption. If they do not, most of Saturday is a no-play again and we will say so on Friday night.
Buffalo has still not announced anything about Josh Allen, and we want to be precise about what is circulating. A preview site is publishing that Allen is "unlikely to see more than a handful of snaps" against Cleveland. That is not playing-time intel and we are not logging it as such. It carries no beat-writer attribution and no quote from anyone inside the building, and it reads like an inference from the same convention everyone else is reasoning from. Our standard is a coach or a beat reporter saying a number of series. Cleveland has met that standard; Buffalo has not, and the asymmetry noted yesterday therefore still stands — six days into game week, with one of ten teams having said anything concrete.
The weekend MLB and WNBA counts were both re-verified this morning and both hold. Saturday Aug 22 carries fifteen MLB games, first pitch 1:35 PM through 8:40 PM ET, with probable starters now named for all fifteen — up from fourteen yesterday. The WNBA slate is unchanged at three games: Indiana at New York 6:00 PM ET, Connecticut at Los Angeles 8:00 PM, Atlanta at Phoenix 9:00 PM. Both checked directly against ESPN's Aug 22 schedule pages this morning rather than carried forward, which is the discipline that should have been applied on Aug 17 and was not.
One methodological note from today's board that will shape Saturday. This morning's MLB card lost nine of sixteen candidates to a single failure mode — hit-rate screens do not know who is pitching, so they happily surface Unders on hitters who hold the platoon advantage. The preseason-football equivalent is a screen that does not know who is playing. It is the same defect wearing a different sport, and it is the reason Saturday's card will again be built on playing-time intel checked against posted lines rather than on any hit-rate machinery.
Wed Aug 19 · 8:37 AM ET First playing-time news of Week 2, and it is on the game this page cares most about. Cleveland head coach Todd Monken has said Shedeur Sanders will start and play the first half against Buffalo on Saturday. That is a change from Week 1, when Cleveland ran Deshaun Watson through the first half and Sanders through the second, and it is the first concrete series-count information any of the ten Saturday teams has produced. It resolves half of our angle #2 and none of angle #1 — Buffalo has still said nothing about Josh Allen, and Allen's status remains the single largest unknown on the slate.
The MLB game count is restored, and yesterday's withdrawal was over-cautious. On Aug 18 we withdrew the fifteen-game figure for Saturday because we could not rule out that it had been carried across from Tuesday. We have now checked Saturday Aug 22 directly against ESPN's schedule and it carries exactly fifteen games, first pitch 12:35 PM through 7:40 PM ET, with probable starters already named for fourteen of them. The original number was right. Withdrawing it was the correct call on the information we had; restoring it with a source is the correct call now, and both entries stay on the page.
WNBA kickoff times corrected — all three were an hour late in Monday's entry. The Saturday slate is Indiana at New York 6:00 PM ET (Prime Video), Connecticut at Los Angeles 8:00 PM (Prime Video), Atlanta at Phoenix 9:00 PM. Monday's entry listed 7:00, 9:00 and 10:00. The games and the count were right; the times were not.
College football is not on this weekend and will not be. Adding this because the question comes up every August: FBS Week 0 is Saturday Aug 29, opening with North Carolina against TCU in Dublin, with FCS games from Thursday Aug 27. There is no college football on Aug 22 and this page will not carry an NCAAF section until the Aug 29 preview.
Tue Aug 18 · 8:36 AM ET Tuesday of game week. Still nothing announced by any of the ten, and that is now worth a sentence rather than a shrug. Schedule re-verified against the league's Week 2 listing this morning: all ten Saturday kickoffs unchanged, noon through 10:00 PM ET, and Sunday Aug 23 still carries only Seattle at Tennessee (8:00 PM). Playing-time reporting conventionally lands Wednesday through Friday, so a blank Tuesday is expected — but it means this page will change more in the next 72 hours than it has in the last 72, and the Thursday and Friday games are where it starts.
Correction to the weekend MLB and WNBA section, which was wrong yesterday in one place and thin in another. Yesterday's entry said Aug 22 carries fifteen MLB games. We have re-checked and are no longer confident in that count — we confirmed a fifteen-game board for Tuesday Aug 18 and we cannot rule out that Saturday's number was carried across from the wrong day. Treat the MLB line below as unverified until we recheck it midweek, which is a worse answer than yesterday's and a more honest one. The WNBA three-game listing is unchanged and still reads correctly.
One thing we learned today that bears on Saturday. Tonight's MLB board has the money on the Over in thirteen of fifteen games. The lesson generalises: when a signal appears almost everywhere it is a market condition rather than an edge. Preseason football is the purest version of that trap — "starters are resting" was true in five of seven Week 1 games, which made it worthless as a differentiator and is exactly why the Thursday/Friday tell below is the only angle on this page we would currently bet a card on.
Mon Aug 17 · 8:10 AM ET Slate re-verified, still ten games, still nothing announced. Checked the Saturday listing against the league schedule this morning: all ten kickoffs are unchanged from Sunday's capture, noon through 10:00 PM ET, and Sunday Aug 23 still carries only Seattle at Tennessee (8:00 PM). No team has announced playing-time plans for any of the ten. That is expected rather than disappointing — those reports land Wednesday through Friday of game week — but we are logging the absence rather than skipping a day, because a gap in this log looks like neglect.
One structural addition we should have made on Sunday: Week 2 does not start on Saturday. It opens Thursday Aug 20 with Las Vegas at Houston (8:00 PM) and San Francisco at the Chargers (10:00 PM), and continues Friday Aug 21 with the Jets at Pittsburgh (7:00), Carolina at Jacksonville (7:30) and Green Bay at Denver (9:00). Those five games matter to this page even though they are not on it: they are the first live read on whether the "Week 2 is the starters' week" convention is actually holding this year, and they resolve before Saturday's card is written. If Thursday and Friday show first-team units getting extended runs, the whole Saturday board looks different.
The MLB and WNBA section below is filled in for the first time — both schedules are now confirmable.
Sun Aug 16 · 12:23 PM ET First publish. Target set to Saturday, Aug 22 — that is where the Week 2 slate actually lives, with ten games between noon and 10:00 PM ET. Sunday Aug 23 carries a single nationally televised game (Seattle at Tennessee, 8:00 PM ET on FOX) and is not worth its own preview. The Week 2 picture is genuinely blank right now: no team has announced playing-time plans, because those land Wednesday through Friday of game week. Treat every note below as structural rather than confirmed. What we do know is the schedule, the Week 1 results that will shape who plays, and one clear structural marker — Week 2 is traditionally the preseason week starters play the most, which cuts directly against the "everyone rests" pattern that made most of Week 1 unbettable.
The Slate
| Kickoff (ET) | Game | Playing-time plan |
| 12:00 PM | Washington @ Detroit | Not announced |
| 1:00 PM | Buffalo @ Cleveland | CLE: Sanders starts, first half. BUF: not announced |
| 1:00 PM | Atlanta @ Indianapolis | Not announced |
| 1:00 PM | Baltimore @ Minnesota | Not announced |
| 4:00 PM | New Orleans @ LA Rams | Not announced |
| 4:00 PM | NY Giants @ Miami | Not announced |
| 7:00 PM | Chicago @ Cincinnati | Not announced |
| 7:00 PM | Philadelphia @ New England | Not announced |
| 7:30 PM | Kansas City @ Tampa Bay | Not announced |
| 10:00 PM | Dallas @ Arizona | Not announced |
Schedule re-verified against the league's Week 2 preseason listing Thu Aug 20 · 8:31 AM ET; unchanged from the Wed Aug 19, Tue Aug 18, Mon Aug 17 and Sun Aug 16 captures. Still one of ten teams with an announced playing-time plan — Cleveland, first half for Shedeur Sanders. Kickoff times in preseason occasionally shift; confirm before Saturday.
The rest of Week 2, and why it belongs on this page
| Kickoff (ET) | Game | Why it matters here |
| Thu 8:00 PM | Las Vegas @ Houston | First read on whether starters play long in Week 2 |
| Thu 10:00 PM | San Francisco @ LA Chargers | Same — and a late window we can watch before Friday |
| Fri 7:00 PM | NY Jets @ Pittsburgh | Two teams with unsettled quarterback rooms |
| Fri 7:30 PM | Carolina @ Jacksonville | Carolina is the team that burned us in Week 1 |
| Fri 9:00 PM | Green Bay @ Denver | Last data point before Saturday's card is written |
These five games are not on our Saturday card, and they are the most useful thing on this page right now. Our entire read on Saturday rests on a convention — that Week 2 is when first-team units play longest. That convention is either true this year or it is not, and Thursday and Friday will show us before we have to commit. Thursday is today. Las Vegas at Houston kicks off at 8:00 PM ET and San Francisco at the Chargers at 10:00 PM ET, which means this section stops being theoretical tonight. If starters are getting a half across those five games, the Saturday board is a genuinely different proposition than if everyone is still resting.
Storylines
Buffalo owes everyone a Josh Allen appearance. Buffalo entered Week 1 planning to give Allen his first preseason snaps and then sat him, which flipped the Carolina game late and cost us our top-rated pick. He has now gone a full preseason week without playing. Whether Buffalo finally plays him at Cleveland is the single most consequential unknown on this slate. Cleveland announced its half on Wednesday; Buffalo still has not, and a preview site's guess that Allen will play "a handful of snaps" is not an announcement. That asymmetry is itself the most bettable thing on this page if it persists into Friday — a confirmed opposing structure against an unconfirmed one is exactly the situation where a line has to guess.
Cleveland's quarterback plan has changed from Week 1, and it is now confirmed. In Week 1 Cleveland ran Deshaun Watson through the first half and Shedeur Sanders through the second. For Saturday, head coach Todd Monken has said Sanders will start and play the first half. That is a rookie quarterback with a confirmed half of work at home, which is the most legible volume setup on the board and the first one this week with an actual source attached rather than a convention behind it.
Kyler Murray's second start in Minnesota. Murray debuted as Minnesota's named starter in Week 1 and the Vikings won, but they did it without Justin Jefferson and Christian Darrisaw, who both sat. Week 2 against Baltimore is the first realistic window to see the intended offence at something close to full strength — if those two are cleared. Still unannounced as of this morning.
Week 2 is the starters' week. The structural point that matters more than any individual name: across the league, Week 2 is conventionally when first-team units get their longest run of the preseason, with Week 3 reserved for rest. If that holds, this slate should offer more real playing-time asymmetry than Week 1 did — where five of seven games were correctly no-plays for us because both teams rested everyone. Thursday and Friday will tell us whether it is holding before we have to act on it.
Per game: what to watch
Buffalo @ Cleveland (1:00 PM). Half of this game is now answered: Sanders starts and plays a half for Cleveland. The remaining question is Allen, and it is the one that decides whether this game is bettable as a side or only as a props story.
Baltimore @ Minnesota (1:00 PM). Jefferson and Darrisaw availability. Minnesota's Week 1 win came without them; the market may not distinguish.
Kansas City @ Tampa Bay (7:30 PM). Kansas City sat Mahomes and every other starter in Week 1 and was still favoured. If that repeats, the price will again be doing the work and there will be nothing here for us.
Dallas @ Arizona (10:00 PM). Dallas ran a genuine Joe Milton–Sam Howell backup competition in Week 1. Competitions like that are a props story rather than a side story, and they resolve into real snap splits by Week 2.
Washington @ Detroit, Atlanta @ Indianapolis, New Orleans @ LA Rams, NY Giants @ Miami, Chicago @ Cincinnati, Philadelphia @ New England. We still have nothing specific and useful to say about these six. Rather than pad this section with generalities, we will fill them in as playing-time reporting arrives — watch the changelog. Unchanged as of Thu Aug 20, which is the fifth consecutive day this paragraph has said the same thing. Cleveland moved on Wednesday; these six still have not, and there are now two days left.
Numbers that will matter
Series counts, not season stats. The only numbers that decide preseason games are how many series each first-team unit takes. "One to two series," "the entire first half," and "the remainder of the contest" are the three phrases we are reading for. We now have the second of those three, from Cleveland.
Whether the line already prices the news. Week 1 taught us this twice. Carolina moved to a road favourite once Allen was ruled out, and we bought in anyway at −142 — and lost. Kansas City stayed favoured while sitting Mahomes, which we correctly passed. The question is never "who is playing" but "how much of that is already in the number." The Cleveland announcement is now public, which means it is now priced, or will be by Saturday.
No Edge Gap here, and there will not be one on the card either. Edge Gap needs a player taking the same measurable shot dozens of times. Preseason rookies and backups do not have that history, and forcing the method onto them produces something that looks rigorous and is not. Saturday's card will be built on playing-time intel checked against posted lines, exactly as Week 1's was.
Read our confidence tiers backwards until further notice. Across Aug 13, 14 and 15 the football pick we labelled High confidence lost every time and the Moderate pick won every time — cumulatively High 2-for-7, Moderate 4-for-4. No football card has run since, so this number is unchanged. We are treating it as a defect in how we assign the label rather than as variance, and it will affect how Saturday's card is written.
Angles we're monitoring
1. Buffalo at Cleveland — a genuine starters-versus-starters game.
What would make us bet it: Buffalo confirming Allen for a half or more, with a line that has not already absorbed the news. Cleveland's half is now confirmed, so this angle rests entirely on the Buffalo side.
What would kill it: Buffalo announcing a rest week, or the line moving hard on any Allen report before we see it. Buffalo already walked back a starters commitment once this preseason, so we are treating any Allen report as provisional until kickoff.
2. Cleveland passing volume — half resolved today.
What would make us bet it: we now have the confirmed structure (Sanders, first half). What is still missing is an actual posted passing number we can verify. In Week 1 we had the intel and could not find a live line, so we published nothing.
What would kill it: no verifiable prop number again, or Cleveland reversing before Saturday. We will not invent a line to make an angle work.
3. Minnesota at full strength versus Minnesota as it looked in Week 1.
What would make us bet it: Jefferson and Darrisaw cleared and the market still pricing Minnesota off a Week 1 performance that did not include them.
What would kill it: either sitting again, or Baltimore committing to a long run for its own first team, which flattens the asymmetry.
4. The Thursday–Friday tell.
What would make us lean into Saturday: first-team units playing a half or more across the five Thu/Fri games, confirming the Week 2 convention while Saturday's lines are still priced on Week 1 rest patterns.
What would kill it: Thursday and Friday looking like Week 1 — everyone rested, nothing to separate. In that case Saturday is mostly no-plays again and this page will say so plainly on Friday night. The first of those five games kicks off tonight at 8:00 PM ET.
5. The no-play watch.
What would make us bet it: nothing — that is the point. Five of seven Week 1 games were correct no-plays.
What would kill the games: both teams resting everyone. When that happens the honest answer is no play, not a coin flip with vig, and we expect at least a few of these ten to land there.
MLB & WNBA this weekend
MLB — fifteen games, re-verified a second time. Withdrawn on Aug 18, restored on Aug 19, and checked again this morning directly against ESPN's Aug 22 page. Saturday carries exactly fifteen games, first pitch 1:35 PM through 8:40 PM ET, and probable starters are now named for all fifteen. Among them: Dylan Cease against Ryan Weathers at Toronto–Yankees (1:35), Jared Jones against Tarik Skubal at Pittsburgh–Dodgers (7:15), Shane McClanahan against Brandon Young at Tampa Bay–Baltimore (7:05). Probables this far out change, and every batter prop we publish is priced off the arm he is facing — so we will not preview individual legs here. Expect a normal Edge Gap card Saturday morning.
WNBA — three games, and the times we published on Monday were wrong. Corrected: Indiana at New York 6:00 PM ET (Prime Video), Connecticut at Los Angeles 8:00 PM (Prime Video), Atlanta at Phoenix 9:00 PM. Monday's entry had all three an hour later. The games and the count were right. Given what the WNBA board has produced twice this week — on Tuesday two enormous Edge Gaps dropped because the hit rates described roles the players no longer had, and today three of the four largest edges pointed into top-two positional defences — the thing to watch on Aug 22 is minutes and matchup rank, not history.
College football — not this weekend. FBS Week 0 is Saturday Aug 29, opening with North Carolina against TCU in Dublin at noon ET, with FCS games from Thursday Aug 27. There is no college football on Aug 22. We are stating it because the absence is easy to assume away in late August, and because NCAAF will need web-primary handling when it does arrive — our data platform does not carry preseason football and we expect the same before the college season proper.
How this page works
This page refreshes every day between now and Saturday. Each update gets its own timestamped entry at the top, newest first, and no prior entry is ever removed or rewritten — including the ones that turn out to be wrong. Yesterday's entry withdrew an MLB game count. Today's restores it. Both are above, in the order they happened, and that is the point of the format.
What this page will never contain is a pick. Previews and selections are different products, and mixing them is how stale information ends up dressed as a recommendation. The card for this slate publishes Saturday on the NFL hub, and every leg on it gets graded in the open at our track record.
Preseason availability changes constantly and nothing on this page is a recommendation to bet.
