Labor Day in the Rain: SMU Lays Three in Tallahassee With 88% of the Public and a Wet Forecast Against It

One game, fully worked: No. 19 SMU at a rested, already-1-0 Florida State on a night the forecast gives a 73% chance of rain. The public is 88% on the road favorite; we lean the home dog at +3 and price one board-verified prop into the softest coverage rank of the weekend. Early edition; Monday's pass finishes the panels.

Early edition, published Sun Sep 6 · 12:33 AM ET · props board swept ~11:40 PM ET Sat (55 lines) · platform recovered 12:35 AM ET — full Match Details gate run, props panel-scored, lean priced at +2.5 under protest · Tallahassee forecast at the 7:30 kickoff window · Monday 6 AM pass completes the Match Details gate · late pass Mon Sep 7 · 4:43 PM ET (platform dark; Vegas layer + availability report) · recovery pass Mon Sep 7 · 4:59 PM ET (platform back — gate + panels run; one leg added)
Edge Gap does not apply here. It needs hit-rate history, and these players don't have usable history for this slate. Forcing it would produce something that looks rigorous and isn't. Playing time is the entire handicap below.

Early edition — one game, published Sunday after midnight. Our data platform's props board was swept for this game (~11:40 PM ET Sat; 55 lines across our ten markets) but the per-player panels and the games board were dark past the patience protocol. The prop leg below carries a PLATFORM price and board windows with a PROVISIONAL Prop Score; the team lean is OPEN (spread from a major book via ESPN and the consensus board, no juice captured). Monday morning's pass prices the lean, runs the full Match Details gate and re-scores. All times Eastern.

Labor Day night, in Tallahassee

One game, and it matters: the ACC's first conference game of the season, a top-20 visitor against a home team that already has a win and two extra days of rest, in a stadium that will be soaked.

⚡ Team data. Florida State is 1-0 after a 34-17 win over New Mexico State in Week 0 behind Stanford transfer Ashton Daniels (202 yards, a touchdown and a pick) — a game the Seminoles played without receivers Tae'Shaun Gelsey and Devin Carter; Gelsey is expected back for this one. FSU went 5-7 last year and 5-7 against the spread, 6-6 to the over. SMU returns Kevin Jennings for a third season as Rhett Lashlee's starter — 3,641 yards, 26 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in a playoff season — after a fall-camp finger injury on his throwing hand cost him two weeks; he's reported healthy. The Mustangs' defense allowed 20.5 a game, top-three in the league, and SMU went 4-9 to the over (69% under) with a 6-7 ATS mark. Market: 88% of tickets are on SMU and the line moved a half-point WITH them (FSU +2.5 → +3) — public and price agree, no reverse move here. FSU has two more days of rest. Matchup: Jennings' 13 interceptions into a Florida State secondary that ranked 28th vs the pass is the number one story; the second is the rain, which flattens SMU's explosive-play offense (33 plays of 20-plus last year) more than it flattens a home team that wants to run. Our read: a road favorite laying three off a bye-length layoff, in the rain, with 88% of the public on its side, against a home team that has already knocked the rust off. That's a home-dog profile we like at plus-three; it isn't a profile we love, because FSU was a 5-7 team with a new quarterback four days ago.
🎯 THE FINAL VERDICT: FLORIDA STATE +2.5 (+112, platform, 12:35 AM ET) — PRICED under our +3 trigger, entered at 50 because plus-money buys the half-point back; pulled at +2. Rest, rain, a game already played, and a public lopsided the other way. Argument against, in full: SMU's defense is the best unit on the field, Jennings has won big road games before, and Daniels threw a pick against New Mexico State. If the number falls to +2.5 by Monday morning we pass — three is the whole point.

LegPriceThe read
D. Robinson O67.5 rec★★★★☆ 8.0−113Panel: median 92.5, 30% target share, SMU 135th vs rec yds (283 allowed a game). Gelsey now DOUBTFUL and Carter OUT — the tree is his. Dissent: under this line in Week 0; rain.
Y. Knight U49.5 rec (RECOVERY ADD)★★★☆☆ 6.5−119Panel: median 42.5, 16% share, 70% L10 under; FSU 28th vs rec yds; rain. Counter: 57.3 average — spike games exist.
K. Jennings U10.5 rush (RECOVERY ADD)★★★☆☆ 6.0−119Panel: median 3, average 3.8, 4.6 carries; sacks subtract. 70% L10 under. Counter: cleared it vs FSU last year; rain scrambles.
K. Jennings O270.5 pass (LATE ADD, 4:58 PM)★★★☆☆ 6.0−119Panel: median 287.5, average 280.5 on 36.6 attempts in a 61%-pass offense; 80% L5 / 70% L10 / 69% 2025. FSU lost three DBs on Sunday's report. The card's one Conflicts leg — FSU 28th vs pass and 18 yards of steam from the 252.5 open, both scored 0.
Screened and declined, on the record: O. Kromah U62.5 rush (80/80/92 windows into SMU's 19th-ranked run defense look perfect — and they are last year's RB3 sample, 14% share behind two players who are gone; he went OVER this number in Week 0 as the lead back. The role trap, named and declined); K. Jennings O264.5 pass (FSU ranked 28th vs the pass, rain — two gates against); K. Jennings U10.5 rush (70% under windows, but a quarterback who has run for 350-plus in a season is a bad under when the passing game gets wet — panel needed); Y. Knight U49.5 rec (70% windows into a 28th-ranked coverage, rain helps — the best of the declined pile, waiting on the target-share panel); Y. Smith O2.5 rec and K. Raphael O69.5 rush (coin-flip windows); A. Daniels markets (one game of 2026 history, no sample). Monday morning's pass hunts every one of these with the panels up.

The ledger

Priced lean: Florida State +2.5 (+112, 50 — pulled at +2, upgraded at +3). Props, panel-scored: D. Robinson O67.5 rec (★★★★ 8.0, 56) · Y. Knight U49.5 rec (★★★ 6.5, 53) · K. Jennings U10.5 rush (★★★ 6.5, 53). Declined: Kromah U62.5 (role trap), Jennings O264.5 pass and Daniels markets. THE RECOVERY PASS — Mon Sep 7 · 4:59 PM ET — the platform came back, and the gate ran.newest
Our data platform re-rendered at 4:47 PM ET; the full Match Details pass and the per-player panels followed for the only game on the board. The number on the platform (4:47 PM ET): SMU −2.5 (−109) / Florida State +2.5 (+108); total 54.5 with the Under at +104 carrying the model's EV+ badge; both moneylines (SMU −129, FSU +135) badged EV+ as well. Public betting on the platform: 78% of spread tickets and 81% of the money on SMU; 69% of tickets and 71% of the money on the Over. Injury tab: Friday-stamped (Carter out, Gelsey doubtful, Markey doubtful; SMU's Rhodes brothers out, Singleton questionable) — the ACC's Sunday report printed in the late pass is the fresher document and stands. Props, panels open: Robinson O67.5 — median 92.5 against a line that's dropped to 66.5, 70% L10, SMU 135th vs receiving yards; held at 58. Knight U49.5 — median 42.5 on a 16% share, 70% L10; the books are split seven yards apart on him (47.5 at the consensus board, 53.5 and 56.5 on the platform) and we sit in the middle at 49.5 — held at 52, and the earlier "better number" phrasing is corrected here. Jennings U10.5 rush — the platform's line has moved to 11.5, a yard our way; held at 52. One leg ADDED — K. Jennings OVER 270.5 passing yards (−119), ★★★ 6.0, conviction 52, the card's one Conflicts leg. Median 287.5 on 36.6 attempts a game in a 61%-pass offense, 80% of L5 and 70% of L10 over, and a Florida State secondary that lost three defensive backs on Sunday's report. Two dissents, both scored zero: FSU ranked 28th against the pass last year, and the number has already run eighteen yards from its 252.5 open. Screened and declined, on the record: K. Raphael O79.5 rush+rec (median 100.5, but the sample is last year's 72% share at another school; the line fell from 94.5 to 79.5 today — fifteen yards of movement that says the market sees a committee with Wisner and Singleton, not a workhorse; new-team role, declined); O. Kromah U59.5 rush (19% share and a 25-yard median last year, and the books RAISED the line from 54.5 — they're pricing this year's role, not last year's; the role trap, declined again); Y. Smith O2.5 receptions (80% L10 / 82% 2025, but SMU ranked 28th vs receptions — a second Conflicts leg, and the card carries one); L. Thomas receiving unders (a tight end with 1.7 targets — hit rates without a role). Under 54.5 (+104, platform EV+): the model likes it and the systems like it; the late pass's reasons for declining it stand (six FSU defenders out or doubtful, sharp money on the Over, correlation with our dog). Declined again, printed again. Nothing re-priced. Kick 7:30.
THE LATE PASS — Mon Sep 7 · 4:43 PM ET — platform dark, the Vegas layer and the availability report carried it.earlier
Our data platform never rendered a price on three loads (4:35–4:42 PM ET), so no panels tonight: no new props were scored and none were added. Everything else moved. The number: SMU −2.5 at the public book, −3 (−102) at the market-making book, with Florida State +3 (−118) there and +2.5 (−105 to +100) elsewhere — the line pushed to 3 on 78–81% of public tickets and money, then stopped; a Las Vegas betting network's splits column (Sep 7) reads that as sharp buyback on the home dog. The market-maker now shows 55% of spread money on Florida State with 29% of tickets. The ratings: three published power-rating systems project this at FSU +2.7, SMU −0.4 and pick'em (+0.1) — every one of them under the market's 2.5–3. The total steamed: 52.5 at the open → 54.5 public book, 55 at the market-maker, 68–71% of money on the Over at both. The Under case is real and we are printing it, not playing it: Week 0/1 games between power-conference opponents are 15-6 to the Under since 2021; tight ACC games (spread inside 3.5, total 55.5 or lower) are 70-48-1 to the Under since 2015; the Effective Strength model projected 49.3 when the total was 52.5. Against it: the rain is gone (8–18% at kickoff, 89°F, wind under 8), Florida State's defense is missing six bodies, the sharp book's money is on the Over, and an Under would ride the same script as our dog. DECLINED, on the record, at 55. Availability (ACC report, Sunday evening; final update 5:30 PM ET): FSU OUT — WR D. Carter, DB K. Hobbs, LB B. Nichelson, CB C. Kennon, S J. Crutchfield; DOUBTFUL — DE D. Desir, WR T. Gelsey, S K. Kirkland, TE G. Markey. SMU OUT — S A. Moses, S J. Milliner-Jones, LB C. Marshall, CB D. Gilbert, RBs E. Kelly, C. Rhodes, L. Rhodes, LB K. Goodwin III, OL A. Hoopii; WR D. Singleton QUESTIONABLE. D. Robinson is not on the report. Legs: Florida State +2.5 (+112) HELD at 54 — the money and the ratings say up, six missing defenders say no. Robinson O67.5 rec RAISED 57→58 — two SMU starting safeties out, dry night, the tree is his (his market was off the consensus board at 4:39; the 5:30 report is the check). Knight U49.5 rec HELD at 52 — the books disagree on his number: the consensus board shows 47.5 while our data platform lists 53.5 and 56.5; we hold 49.5 in the middle, and Singleton's status could push targets his way. Jennings U10.5 rush DOCKED 53→52 — Desir and Nichelson missing means fewer sacks pulling the total down. Weather at kickoff: 89°F, clear, wind 8 mph, rain chance 8% — the early edition's 73% rain call is fully gone; heat is the only weather input left. Nothing re-priced. The full board is on the NCAAF Insights Board.
THE SECOND-OPINION PASS — Mon Sep 7 · 7:35 AM ET — the platform came back up, and the full layer ran.earlier
Our data platform re-rendered at 7:27 AM ET and the whole apparatus followed: per-game Match Details, the injury tab, both books’ money splits, the Vegas line tracker with openers, three power-rating systems, and — new to the desk as of this morning — the Las Vegas network’s own pick-makers’ board. Everything below is argued, both directions, with stamps. The market has been steaming SMU: the tracker shows the spread OPENED −1.5 at the market-making book (−2.5 elsewhere) and sits −3 at all four Nevada shops (captured 7:35 AM ET Mon) — a point and a half of movement against our Florida State lean, which by house rule zeroes the market component and gets said out loud. The public book agrees: 76% of spread handle and 76% of tickets on SMU. And the network’s expert room is a chorus: eight of nine side picks posted on this game take SMU — one takes FSU +3, one takes Under 53.5. Now the other side of the argument, which is why the lean holds at 54 instead of shrinking: at the Vegas market-making book the tickets are 75% SMU but the MONEY is 49% Florida State — a quarter of the bets holding half the cash is the sharp-vs-square shape this shop respects most. Two of the three rating systems project this game at a pick’em or better for the home side (Effective Strength FSU −0.4, Bettor Rating +0.1; the manual Power Rating says +2.7), against a market at +3 — and the season guide’s preseason math said FSU +2.7 before a snap was played. Steam versus sharp splits and ratings: we hold, we don’t raise, and both counts are printed. Injury tab re-verified (platform, 7:35 AM ET Mon): unchanged from Saturday’s stamps — FSU: Carter OUT (back), Gelsey DOUBTFUL, Markey doubtful, Parks and Thomas probable; SMU: both Rhodes backs out, Singleton questionable. Prop legs, re-argued: Y. Knight Under 49.5 RAISED 51 → 52 — the platform’s own insight reads 7 of his last 9 under this number and its model now hangs the EV+ badge on the under at +113; the price drifting from our −119 to plus-money means the market moved toward the over, so the raise stops at one point and both facts are printed. K. Jennings Under 10.5 rush HELD at 53, now with the platform’s insight in agreement: under in 5 of his last 6 with a 4.8-yard average — sack math doing exactly what the leg needs. D. Robinson Over 67.5 HELD at 57 — no new dissent; the 92.5 median against the 135th-ranked coverage stands, dry night and all. The whole screened universe for tonight — including the reads we did NOT price — is on the new NCAAF Insights Board.
THE GAMEDAY PASS — Mon Sep 7 · 7:16 AM ET — run on web sources only, and here is why.earlier
Our data platform was dark at this morning’s pre-flight (games board never rendered a price, tested 6:10–6:12 AM ET with a reload), so per house rule this is the cheap-web version: national lines, public injury wires, and the forecast — no per-player panels, no Las Vegas network second opinion today, stated in print rather than papered over. Two things moved, both material. 1) The line hit our trigger: the national consensus is SMU −3 / FSU +3 (captured 7:18 AM ET). We published FSU +2.5 at +112 and wrote the rule in advance — “if +3 returns by Monday morning the pass upgrades it” — so it upgrades: Florida State +2.5 RAISED 50 → 54. The market moved toward our side after we took it; the published price and line are locked, and the half-point we’re giving away against the current number is the cost of Saturday’s timestamp. 2) The rain is gone. Saturday night’s 73% rain chance — a load-bearing wall in three of these four legs — has collapsed: the Tallahassee hourly forecast (captured 7:19 AM ET) tops out at a 13% chance in the early evening and sits 5–7% through the 7:30 kick, 84°F and near-still air. Consequences, printed leg by leg: D. Robinson Over 67.5 rec RAISED 56 → 57 — rain was the only script deduction on a 92.5-yard median against the 135th-ranked coverage, and it just left the building. Y. Knight Under 49.5 rec DOCKED 53 → 51 — the forecast was the under’s friend and his 57.3 average sits over the line on a dry night; the 42.5 median and the 16% share keep it on the card, smaller. K. Jennings Under 10.5 rush HELD at 53 — the dissent we printed (rain turns a passer into a scrambler) dies with the forecast, but sack math was always the thesis and it doesn’t need weather. The FSU lean loses its wet-ball leg too; the market’s own move to +3 replaces it, which is exactly what the raise is sized on. Injuries: no fresh wire this morning — the statuses stand as stamped Saturday night (FSU: Gelsey DOUBTFUL, Carter OUT, Markey doubtful; SMU: both Rhodes backs out, Singleton questionable) and were not re-verifiable without the platform’s injury tab; treat any pregame news as senior to this card. The full research pass — panels, both books’ splits, the ratings — is waiting on the platform; if it comes back before kick, hit Run again.
THE PLATFORM RECOVERY PASS — Sun Sep 6 · 12:52 AM ET.earlier
The data platform came back and the full gate ran for Monday's game. Lean priced: Florida State +2.5 (+112) — a half-point under our +3 trigger, entered at the smallest size on the card because the plus-money price buys back most of it; pulled outright if it reaches +2. The crowd and the cash: 78% of spread tickets and 72% of the money on SMU; 87% of tickets and 82% of the money on the OVER 53.5 — a shootout consensus in a 73%-rain forecast, and we're on the other side of it. Injury tab (stamped tonight and Sep 4): FSU WR T. Gelsey DOUBTFUL, WR D. Carter OUT (back fracture), RB G. Markey doubtful; SMU RBs C. Rhodes OUT and L. Rhodes out for the season, WR D. Singleton questionable. Props from the panels: D. Robinson O67.5 rec re-scored ★★★★ 8.0 (median 92.5, 30% target share, SMU 135th vs rec yds — and now the only healthy starting receiver); Y. Knight U49.5 rec ★★★ 6.5 added (median 42.5, 16% share, FSU 28th); K. Jennings U10.5 rush ★★★ 6.5 added (median 3 — sacks count against a college QB's rushing total). Kromah U62.5 stays declined: RB3 sample, RB1 line. Monday's 6 AM pass re-checks the number, the forecast and the tab.
