1. Jets ML (−245). Head coach Aaron Glenn is playing a real chunk of his starters, Geno Smith included — consistent with Glenn's approach in his first two preseason openers last year. Tampa Bay is missing more than expected: Baker Mayfield is out, and backup Jake Browning — who would have started in his place — is now in doubt after injuring his back at Tuesday's joint practice. That likely pushes undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels into meaningful early snaps behind an offensive line that reportedly struggled against Jets pressure in those same joint practices. This is the clearest talent-and-workload gap on the board tonight.
2. Commanders ML (+146) — a genuine reversal from the market favorite. Miami is the number's favorite (−3, roughly −166 on the moneyline), and on paper that makes sense: it's a home underdog getting real value. But the underlying evidence points the other way. Washington's Jayden Daniels, backed by capable veteran depth in Marcus Mariota and Sam Hartman, is expected to play meaningful snaps against a Miami defense that struggled badly in this week's joint practices. Miami's new starter, Malik Willis, is unproven at this job and was reportedly under siege behind Miami's line in those same practices — and the Dolphins gutted their receiver room this offseason, cutting ties with every pass-catcher who topped 350 yards last year. We like the workload-and-talent picture here more than the listed favorite does. One honest caveat: a second outlet we checked saw the same joint-practice reports and still declined to pick a side outright, taking the game total instead. We're rating this Moderate, not High, because that hesitation is a fair one.
3. Broncos @ Falcons — no play, and the reasoning reversed once we dug in. Our first read of the beat-reporter coverage suggested a clean Atlanta angle: Falcons starters, including Tua Tagovailoa, would play while Denver sat Bo Nix. Digging further changed the picture. Denver's Bo Nix isn't just resting — he's out recovering from ankle surgery, meaning backups Jarrett Stidham and Sam Ehlinger (each confirmed to play a full half) are effectively Denver's real quarterbacks tonight, and both are established, productive veterans in this exact system. Atlanta's plan, confirmed directly by both teams, is for each side's starters to play only 10 to 15 snaps before handing off to backups — for Atlanta, that means Tua for a token series or two, then veteran Cooper Rush and undrafted rookie Jack Strand for the rest of the night. When the actual difference-making talent on both sides plays a combined half-quarter of snaps, the rest of the game is backup-versus-backup football, and that's a coin flip we're not pricing with any real conviction. We're passing on the line entirely rather than pretend otherwise.
No player props tonight — here's why
We couldn't verify a single live prop number. The workload intel tonight is genuinely strong: Sean Payton has confirmed Stidham starts and plays the first half with Ehlinger taking the second, and Miami's Malik Willis is confirmed to see extended action too. In a normal week we'd build props around exactly that kind of clean, quoted workload split. Tonight, every prop board we checked either failed to render a usable number or didn't have these specific matchups posted yet when we went to verify. Rather than publish a passing-yards line we can't confirm is real and current, we're skipping player props entirely tonight. Fewer picks is always the right call over a guessed number — if it isn't there, it isn't there.
The case against our own #1
−245 is a real price to lay in a game that's still, fundamentally, preseason football. Rookie undrafted quarterbacks have occasionally strung together a surprising half in exactly these settings, and a back injury to Tampa's primary backup is not the same as him being ruled fully out — if Browning plays through it, the talent gap shrinks. We also haven't seen this specific Jets offensive line unit against a real opposing pass rush yet this preseason; joint-practice reports are informative but they're not a game. The floor for a fluky backup-QB special is never zero in the NFL, preseason included.
We're keeping the Jets at #1 because the workload and personnel case is the strongest and best-sourced one on the board tonight. But −245 already prices in a lot of that edge, and a preseason final score is genuinely one bad series away from looking very different.
