NFL Week 2, Thursday: Lions +5.5 After the Number Ran, the Under the Sharps Are Holding, and Gibbs Without Montgomery

Buffalo went from −3 to −5.5 in three days with the public and the money together; three rating systems have it at a field goal, two Week-2 systems point at the dog and 82% of the market-maker's tickets are on the other side. Lions +5.5 and Under 54.5 (the dollars at both books lean Under against a 72–77% ticket Over). Props: Gibbs O89.5 with Montgomery gone and Buffalo 28th vs the run, Cook O78.5 at a line that got cheaper, Goff O35.5 attempts as the hedge. Fourteen tiles rated.

Thursday night in Orchard Park: a new building, a decimated Detroit secondary, and a number that ran

The first regular-season game at the new Highmark Stadium, and the market spent the week making Buffalo bigger — −3 at the open Sunday night, −4.5 at the public book, −5.5 at the Vegas market-making book by Wednesday afternoon, with 79–83% of the dollars behind the move. We think the number ran past the game. Two team leans and three props below, each argued against, plus the positional board: twelve skill players and both kickers, every one rated. ⚡ THE JUICE. Platform pass, Thu Sep 17 · 6:18 PM ET (the platform came back at 6:05 PM ET): the prop board moved on two of our three legs and both moves are printed as CLV, not hidden. Gibbs: the main rushing line dropped from 89.5 to 79.5 at 5:17 PM — our 89.5 now hangs as an alt at +106; that is ten yards of the market moving against a two-star leg whose case was the role, not the panel (median still 55.5). Cook: the board is 79.5 (+103) — a yard above our 78.5, the market agreeing. Goff: attempts moved to 36.5 (+106) and 36 (−119) — our 35.5 is the better number by a point. Both kickers moved: Bates is 7.5 (+108) now, not 6.5. Kincaid ticked 51.5 → 52.5 (−102). J. Williams is 59.5 at +104. New this week — the platform's Receiving Chart: every receiver panel now carries a zone map of the player's 2025 targets (deep / intermediate / short / behind the line, left-middle-right) coloured by where THIS defense ranks by catch rate allowed, with a headline "X% of his targets come in zones where this defense is tough." We read it as a fourth opponent input on every receiving tile below: it does not enter the six Prop Score components (the opp rank on the exact stat does), it re-sizes conviction and prints. Splits at 6:16 PM ET: the market-maker's total went back to 54.5 and its Under gap collapsed to +6 (48% of the dollars on 42% of tickets); the public book is 72/65 Buffalo, Under 39/36. The 2:18 PM gameday read and the Wednesday read follow. What changed since Wednesday 5:45 PM ET: the final report changed nothing that decides a leg. Detroit: Mahogany (hip) and RT Blake Miller (knee) OUT — two starting linemen, not one; Branch and Joseph (both starting safeties) OUT; D.J. Reed Questionable (foot, limited Tue/Wed). Buffalo: Ty Johnson, Cole Bishop and T.J. Sanders all Questionable after limited Wednesdays; Terrel Bernard (calf) carries no designation and plays. Johnson's tag stands, so the Cook cap at 6.0 stands. The market moved the total, not the side: 55 at the market-maker (54.5 → 55 since Wednesday), 55.5 at one shop; the spread froze at +5.5 everywhere but one book. Data-platform note: our data platform did not hydrate at pre-flight (tested 2:11, 2:12 and 2:13 PM ET after a reload), so this pass carries no new panels and no refreshed prop prices — every prop below displays the price it was published at, and the second opinion (two books, the tracker, the official reports) did the re-verification. The Wednesday read, as published: Both teams won ugly. Detroit needed overtime to beat New Orleans 31–30 and lost its starting left guard doing it — Christian Mahogany is OUT (hip), joining center Cade Mays (IR) on the shelf, so the Lions play a road primetime game with two new interior linemen in front of Goff and Gibbs. The defense is worse off: Brian Branch (Achilles) and Kerby Joseph (knee) are both out — that is both starting safeties — and D.J. Reed is Questionable at corner. Buffalo beat Houston 36-something on a late Allen-to-Palmer touchdown; Ty Johnson (RB2) and T.J. Sanders are Questionable, Cole Bishop is Questionable but finished the game. The platform's matchup panel is last season's: Detroit's offense was fourth in scoring (28.3), Buffalo's defense first against the pass (156.9 a game) and 28th against the run (136.2) — which is the whole prop board in one line. Jahmyr Gibbs, now without David Montgomery (traded to Houston), took 29 carries in the opener.
💸 THE CROWD VS THE CASH. Gameday, 2:13 PM ET — the public book: Bills −5.5 holds 64% of the tickets and 74% of the money; the moneyline is 80% of tickets and 74% of the dollars Buffalo; the total is 65% of tickets Over and 59% of the money — the Under holds 41% of the dollars on 35% of the tickets (+6, thinner than Wednesday's +18). The market-maker: Bills −5.5 at 66% of tickets and 78% of dollars (still no gap — public and sharp money on the same side); moneyline 97% of the dollars on 68% of the tickets (SHARP Buffalo to win, unchanged); the total at 55 is 60% of tickets Over and only 45% of the money — the Under holds 55% of the dollars on 40% of the tickets (+15, SHARP, up from +14). Tags today: Under = CONTRARIAN (60–65% of tickets Over) + SHARP at the market-maker; Lions +5.5 = CONTRARIAN (64–66% of tickets on Buffalo — the ticket count came off Wednesday's 82%), with the money still against it. Tracker (2:15 PM ET): DET +5.5 at seven books, +4.5 at one; total 55 at four, 54.5 at two, 55.5 at one; openers +3/+3.5 and 51.5–53.5. Ratings and systems are Wednesday's (BUF −4.7/−3.9/−3.4; totals 53.5/54.3; small road dogs 44-17, fade home W1 one-score winners 6-15-3, W1 ≤3-pt winners → Under 44-23-1) — nothing re-rates on a Thursday. The expert room was not re-counted on a short run.
🎯 THE FINAL VERDICT: LIONS +5.5 (−106; +5.5 −110 at the market-maker) — conviction 55. UNDER 54.5 (+104) — conviction 56. The side: the market moved two and a half points on a game whose three rating systems have it at a field goal or less, two record-backed Week-2 systems point at Detroit, and 82% of the market-maker's tickets are on the other side. Argument against, printed in full: the money is with the move, not against it — 79–83% of the dollars are Buffalo at both books, so there is no sharp signal on our side, only a contrarian one; Detroit's interior line is patched, its two best defensive backs are out, and Dan Campbell is 8-18 straight-up as a road underdog. That is why this is 55 and not 60. The total: two books' dollars lean Under against a 72–77% ticket stampede to the Over, the ratings sit half a point under, a 65.7% Week-2 system fires, and Thursday games score less. Argument against: these teams played to 90 points the last time they met, the total moved up a point this week, and a Detroit secondary without its safeties is exactly how Allen makes 54 look small. Game-state disclosure (Lesson 10): Lions +5.5, Under 54.5 and Gibbs O89.5 all want the same game — competitive, Detroit with the ball, Buffalo not running away. Three legs, one state: size them as one bet. Goff O35.5 attempts is the hedge — it cashes in the game the other three lose. Cook O78.5 wants Buffalo leading, which is the market's game. UPDATE (Thu Sep 17 · 2:18 PM ET): Lions +5.5 holds at 55. Same number at seven books, same money against it (74–78% of the dollars Buffalo), the ticket count moved toward Detroit (82% → 66% Buffalo at the market-maker) which weakens the contrarian tag a notch and changes nothing else; Blake Miller joining Mahogany on the shelf is the argument against, and it was already priced into the 55. Under 54.5 re-sized 56 → 55. The sharp layer got louder (market-maker Under +15 on the dollars, up from +14; the public book's gap thinned to +6) but the number moved against us — the total is 55 at the market-maker and 55.5 at one shop, so our 54.5 currently holds half a point to a point of negative CLV. Anyone joining takes Under 55.5 at the one book that hangs it. Nothing on the report touches the props: Gibbs and Goff face a Buffalo defense with the same personnel, Cook's RB2 is still Questionable (cap stands). UPDATE 2 (Thu Sep 17 · 6:18 PM ET, platform pass): Under 54.5 re-sized 55 → 53. The loudest layer we had — the market-maker's +15 Under dollar gap — is +6 at 6:16 PM with the total back at 54.5 (52% of its money now Over); the public book's Under gap is +3. What is left is the ratings (53.5/54.3), the 65.7% system and a Thursday-night lean; that is a 53, still published. Lions +5.5 holds 55 (71–72% of the money Buffalo at both books, number frozen). Gibbs O89.5 stays at two stars and is now displayed at +106 — the board moved to 79.5 against us; the leg grades at −118 as published and the ten-yard move goes in the Miss Ledger as a candidate regardless of result: a role-over-panel leg whose score is under 5.0 does not publish until the board confirms the role (line up or price shortening). Goff's attempts got a point better; Cook's a point worse. The Receiving Chart on the two Buffalo pass-catchers we watch: Kincaid — 41% of his 2025 targets came in zones Detroit is tough in; his biggest zone (intermediate left, 22%) is neutral and the intermediate middle (14%) is where Detroit is weakest — with both safeties out that middle is the seam we wrote about; still WATCH on the 39 median. Moore — 47% tough, an even spread. Detroit's pair: St. Brown 72% tough, J. Williams 62% tough, LaPorta 69% tough — Buffalo's zone profile is exactly the "1st vs receiving yards" rank in colour, and it argues for the Under.

This is the one Conflicts leg we allow ourselves, and the conflict is honest: Buffalo faced the second-fewest pass attempts in the league last year because Buffalo leads. But that is the point — Detroit is a 5.5-point dog with two new interior linemen (Mahogany and Mays are both out) and a run game that just needed 29 Gibbs carries to beat New Orleans. If this goes the way the market says, Goff throws 40. He threw 39 in Week 1 and the line drifted DOWN from 36.5 to 35.5. Passing yards (268.5 — up 18 from the open) are the trap; attempts are the volume bet. Read the panel and you'd run: every window says under, the median is 55.5. Read the roster and you'd play: David Montgomery was traded to Houston, Gibbs took a career-high 29 carries for 156 in the opener, and his coach said he can do more. The 2025 tape is a different pie — a 64% share in a committee — and every 'under' window was earned in it. The matchup is the Bills' 28th-ranked run defense from last season (136 a game). The score is two stars because the score is honest about what it can see; the role is why this is on the card. Dissent: Detroit's interior line is patched (Bartch at LG, Scruggs at C), and a 5.5-point dog can lose its run game to the scoreboard. Platform pass (Thu Sep 17 · 6:18 PM ET): main line cut 89.5 → 79.5 at 5:17 PM; our 89.5 is an alt at +106 (displayed; grades at −118). Ten yards against us — a ledger candidate either way.

Twenty-one yards of cushion and a 37% air-yard share are exactly the kind of number we hunt — and it is on WATCH for two reasons we can name. One: the line opened 45.5 on Monday and is 59.5 now; fourteen yards of the edge has already been bought, and the expert room has two of its writers on it. The case for the over writes itself: Detroit is missing both starting safeties (Branch and Joseph), Allen just threw for 334 in Houston, and the Lions' secondary was torched in the second half by New Orleans. The case against is the panel: a 210 average across the last ten because Buffalo's favorite script is 27 attempts and a lead, and a Las Vegas network's AI model projects him at 212 — an UNDER with two stars. Model disagreement caps this at three stars by house rule; a 2.5-yard cushion doesn't clear the bar. If Buffalo needs to throw, it's an easy over; if the Bills lead by 14 at half, it isn't.

Fifteen yards of cushion on the median, the best per-carry number of any back on the board (5.2), and a line that moved down — 80.5 at the open to 78.5 — while the market made Buffalo a bigger favorite. That is the shape we want: a home favorite's bell cow whose number got cheaper. Week 1 (13 carries, 57 yards in a one-score game at Houston) is the dissent and the reason the five-game window is 20%. No 2025 sample on the panel and one 2026 game. Twelve points in Houston is a fact, not a projection. The line came down from 8 to 7.5 and −134 is the wrong price for a guess.
