We added two things to our process today: a matchup layer, and a much wider set of prop categories. Between them they produced the most instructive result we've had.

The matchup layer threw out Lauren Betts Under 6.5 Points. Then the wider categories found Lauren Betts Over 9.5 Points + Rebounds + Assists — and it's now the second-best pick on the card.

Same player. Same game. Same defensive weakness driving both calls in opposite directions.

How that happens

Las Vegas allows 17.8 points per game to centers — 13th in the league, dead last, flagged favorable for an Over. Lauren Betts is a center.

Her Under 6.5 Points is a bad bet because she's facing the defense that gives up more to her position than anyone. The same-position log is blunt about it: Betts personally scored 13 on Las Vegas on 7/22 with the line at 5.5.
Her Over 9.5 Pts + Reb + Ast is a good bet for exactly that reason. Her head-to-head on this line is 100%, she posted 18 against them on 7/22, and her median is 12.5 against a 9.5 line.

Ranking on hit rate alone, you'd never see this. Ranking on price alone, you'd never see it either. You only see it when you ask who is she playing, and at what.

Combo props get a component-level matchup read

A genuinely useful discovery: for combination props, the matchup data breaks down by each component rather than giving one blended number. For Betts against Las Vegas, by position:

ComponentLVA Allows (vs C)RankVerdict
Points17.813thFavorable
Rebounds9.47thNeutral
Assists2.45thUnfavorable

That assists number looks like a problem until you check what Betts actually produces: her line is almost entirely points and rebounds, with zero assists in eight of her last ten games. The unfavorable component is the one she barely uses. The favorable component is her biggest. You have to read the composition against the breakdown — the headline number alone would mislead you in either direction.

Positional splits keep diverging from overall ranks

OpponentOverall RankPositional Rank
Phoenix (points)8th — Neutral13th vs Guards — Favorable
New York (points)7th — Neutral10th vs Guards — Favorable
Las Vegas (points)9th — Neutral13th vs Centers — Favorable

Three teams that look thoroughly average league-wide are all bottom-of-the-league against one specific position.

We also tightened the odds filter

Our screen previously accepted anything down to −200. It's now −160. Lines juiced past that are expensive and frequently unavailable on the DFS platforms most readers use. One casualty: Ariel Atkins Over 2.5 Assists drifted to −175 mid-session and fell out of the screen. She isn't on this card, and that's the filter working.

The Card

Price note on Betts. The sportsbook price we can see on this line is heavily juiced — well past our own −160 cutoff — while the implied probability reads 58%, which suggests a better number exists somewhere. Check your price before taking it. On flat-payout DFS platforms this matters less, since the multiplier doesn't change with the underlying juice, but on a sportsbook at the displayed price this is not a bet we'd make.

The reasoning

Kelsey Mitchell — Over 24.5 Points. New York reads neutral at 7th overall but is 10th against guards. Mitchell averages 27.9 with a median of 27.5 against a 24.5 line, clearing it in eight of ten.
Lauren Betts — Over 9.5 Pts+Reb+Ast. Covered above. Median 12.5 against a 9.5 line, nine of ten, 100% head-to-head, and she put up 18 on this opponent three weeks ago.
Erica Wheeler — Over 9.5 Points. Best price on the card at plus money. Phoenix is 8th overall but 13th — last — against guards. Wheeler averages 12.8, median 13, against a 9.5 line.
Caitlin Clark — Under 4.5 Rebounds. The only Under that survived, and it survived because New York is 3rd in rebounds allowed — the strong defense an Under actually needs. Median 3 against a 4.5 line.
Shakira Austin — Over 16.5 Points. Las Vegas is 13th against centers, and Austin dropped 25 on them on 7/22. Centers have gone over their line in four of the last seven against Las Vegas.
DeWanna Bonner — Over 6.5 Rebounds. Los Angeles is 13th in rebounds allowed. Bonner averages 7.9, median 8.5. Weakest leg on the card — see below.

What the matchup layer threw out

Alanna Smith — Under 12.5 Points — Edge Gap +38.9. By far the strongest number available: 96% on the season, 95% over her last 20, 100% head-to-head. Under a hit-rate-only method this is an instant top pick.

It failed on four counts. Toronto is 15th — worst in the league — in points allowed. The line climbed from 9.5 at open to 12.5. Azzi Fudd is a game-time decision and the injury note states that if she sits, Smith sees more minutes. And the game is Wednesday, not today — the props board mixes dates once a slate begins.
Cameron Brink — Under 4.5 Def Rebounds — Edge Gap +25.2. DROPPED. Second-best number on the board. Phoenix is 14th — worst — in defensive rebounds allowed. His median is 4 against a 4.5 line: no cushion at all.
Natasha Mack — Under 4.5 Def Rebounds — Edge Gap +15.2. DROPPED. Los Angeles is 11th in defensive rebounds allowed, flagged unfavorable.
Lauren Betts — Under 6.5 Points — Edge Gap +13.0. DROPPED — then re-found from the other direction as our #2. The single clearest demonstration of why this layer exists.

The pattern in the discards: every dropped pick was an Under against a weak defense. High Under hit rates were clustering in precisely the spots where the opponent surrenders that stat most freely — a systematic error that a price-only model cannot see.

The case against our own #1

Mitchell's season rate is only 53%, and her head-to-head against New York is 33%. The blended number is carried by recent form — 100% over her last five. That's a hot streak sitting well above her season baseline, and hot streaks regress. Her two misses in the last ten came in games where she was held to 20 and 23, both well within normal variance of this line. If New York's guard defense has improved since those rankings were compiled, this leg breaks first.
Weakest link: DeWanna Bonner. The matchup is favorable and her median sits two clear of the line, but she posted zero rebounds on 8/09 and her head-to-head is 20%. One zero in ten games is a real volatility signal.
Concentration note: two legs come from Phoenix–Los Angeles and two from Washington–Las Vegas. If either game turns lopsided and starters rest, those pairs suffer together. These are not six independent outcomes.
