Small slate tonight — three games, six teams — which means every leg on this card comes from one of Atlanta @ Connecticut, LA Sparks @ New York, or Washington @ Las Vegas. Two other names with big Edge Gap numbers showed up on our first pass tonight and got thrown out immediately: they belonged to games not being played today. The live board mixes in the next slate once games elsewhere are underway, and we cross-check every candidate against the actual schedule before it's allowed on a card.

The more interesting story tonight is what happened once we ran our forward-looking projection check against the Edge Gap ranking. Three legs that ranked well on price-vs-history alone got demoted or dropped once we compared them against tonight's minutes-and-production projections. We're publishing that process, not just the survivors.

The Card

The reasoning

Shakira Austin — Over 29.5 Pts+Reb+Ast. She's exceeded 28.5 in five straight games, averaging 36.6 over that stretch — the best recent form on the board by a wide margin, and it's why this leg carries the top Edge Gap on the card. The opposing defense ranks dead last in the league against her position specifically. The catch: our projection model, which already knows tonight's expected minutes, lands at almost exactly her number — a coin flip, not a confirmation. We're ranking her #1 on the strength of the other two signals, but see the case against below.
Erica Wheeler — Over 17.5 Pts+Reb+Ast. Best price on the card at plus money, and our projection model has her combined production a half-point above this exact line — a real if modest confirmation from the one signal that already accounts for tonight's expected role.
Marine Johannes — Over 4.5 Points. Modest full-season rate but a strong recent run, and the projection model has her more than two and a half points clear of this number — the largest projection cushion on the card relative to its line.
Diamond Miller — Over 11.5 Points+Rebounds. Same story as Johannes: the projection model likes this one more than the raw Edge Gap ranking does, with just under a three-point cushion above the line.
Rhyne Howard — Under 21.5 Points+Assists. The lowest-conviction leg on the card by Edge Gap, but the projection lands more than a point under this number, which is the direction the pick needs.
Michaela Onyenwere — Over 9.5 Points+Rebounds. The weakest Edge Gap on the card, included because the projection model likes it more than the history alone does — projected production sits nearly five points clear of the line, the biggest gap of any leg tonight.

Where Edge Gap and the projection model disagreed

This is the part of the process we think matters most, and we're not going to bury it.

Brionna Jones — Under 19.5 Pts+Reb+Ast. DROPPED. Edge Gap of +19.7 — the second-best number on the whole board tonight, and she's missed this number in 7 of her last 8 games. On pure history, this is an easy top-3 pick.

Two things argued against it. The component-level matchup data shows the opponent is below-average at limiting rebounds specifically to forwards — the exact stat driving most of her total. And our projection model, which already knows tonight's expected minutes for both rosters, has her combined line landing fractionally above 19.5, not below it. History says Under. The forward-looking signal and the matchup breakdown both lean the other way. When two of three signals disagree with the one built on the biggest sample, we don't publish it as a confident pick — we say so instead.
Jackie Young — Over 23.5 Points+Rebounds. DROPPED. Edge Gap of +17.7, but the projection model has her combined line about a point under this number — directly against the pick. A strong Edge Gap with a projection on the wrong side of the line is exactly the situation our process is built to catch, not ignore.
Jonquel Jones — Under 12.5 Rebounds+Assists. DROPPED. Same pattern: solid Edge Gap (+15.9), but the projection lands just above the line rather than below it. Two legs from the same slate hitting the identical failure mode is worth noting on its own — it suggests tonight's price movement on rebound-and-assist combos has drifted slightly out of step with expected minutes across the board, not just for one player.

The case against our own #1 pick

The projection is a wash, and her career context is thinner than the hot streak suggests. Five huge games are five huge games, but her rate across a full prior season sits far below where she's playing right now — this is a player having an our data platform stretch, and our data platform stretches regress. Our forward-looking model, which already bakes in tonight's expected minutes, has her landing essentially on the number rather than clearing it. And the actual same-position result log against tonight's opponent is closer to a coin flip than the "worst in the league at her position" defensive ranking implies on its own — roughly half the recent games at her position have gone under this kind of number against this defense, not over it.

We're keeping her at #1 because the recent form and the positional matchup are both genuinely strong signals, and two out of three isn't nothing. But anyone taking this leg should know the forward-looking signal is silent on it, not supportive.

Injuries checked

We checked the latest injury reports for all six teams before finalizing this card. Nothing rose to the level of affecting a featured player's role tonight — the notable absences on both sides of the Atlanta/Connecticut game are reserves who don't project to change rotation minutes for the players above.
