Three games, and a screen that produced two picks. The two largest Edge Gaps we generated today are not on the card, and the reason is the whole point of running a matchup layer at all.
The Card
Lines and hit-rate windows captured from our props screen Sun Aug 16 · 12:15 PM ET. "Opp Rank" is the opponent's defensive rank against that specific stat — 1st is the toughest, 13th the softest. For an Under, a tough defence supports the pick; a soft one argues against it.
The reasoning
Caitlin Clark — Under 4.5 Rebounds. The only leg on the board today where price, history and matchup all point the same way. Her history clears the number in 100% of the last five and 90% of the last ten, on a 73% season rate, against a −144 price implying 59%. And Atlanta ranks 1st in the league defending this exact stat — the toughest rebounding matchup available, which is precisely what an Under wants. Edge Gap ranks it second-best on our raw board; the matchup layer promotes it to first.
Angel Reese — Under 2.5 Assists. A smaller and honestly a scruffier edge. The season rate underneath it is only 59% and the 2025 figure is 30%, which is the sort of year-over-year swing that should make anyone slow down — it usually means a changed role rather than changed ability. What keeps it on the card is that the recent windows agree (80% last-5, 80% last-10, 75% last-20) and Indiana's 8th-ranked assist defence is genuinely neutral rather than hostile. This is a second pick, not a co-headliner.
Why the two biggest edges are not here
Edge Gap ranks. The matchup gates. Today the gate did its job twice. Our top two raw edges were Ezi Magbegor Under 13.5 Points+Rebounds (+31.0) and Jade Melbourne Under 7.5 Rebounds+Assists (+27.0), both in Chicago–Seattle. Both run into a Chicago defence ranked 13th — last in the league — against those exact stats. That is the strongest possible version of a conflict: we would be betting the Under against the softest defence available. Our own rule says a strong conflict gets dropped rather than published with an asterisk, so both are dropped. Megan DiLeo Under 1.5 Assists (+16.0) goes the same way against a 12th-ranked Phoenix defence.
That leaves a two-leg card from a three-game slate. We would rather publish two defensible legs than five with three excuses attached. It is also worth saying plainly that this is the second consecutive day the matchup layer has gutted a WNBA board — and that yesterday, the one leg it approved lost while a leg it flagged as conflicted won. One day is noise. We are watching whether this layer actually earns its keep, and we will publish that answer either way.
The case against our own #1 pick
Clark's rebounding number is the one most likely to be moved by things we did not check. Two specific holes. First, a rebound line is a playing-time line before it is anything else — a blowout in either direction, or foul trouble, changes the denominator, and our screen carried an explicit "team injuries may impact playing time" warning on this slate that we did not chase down. Second, and more important: a defensive ranking assumes a full roster. Atlanta being 1st against rebounds is a season-long figure. If Atlanta is missing a frontcourt starter tonight, the single strongest argument for this pick quietly stops being true, and we have not verified Atlanta's availability report. We have been caught by exactly this before.
We are keeping it at #1 because the three signals we did measure genuinely agree, which is rarer than it sounds. But confirm Atlanta's frontcourt is intact before you treat the matchup half of this argument as real.
What we did not run today
No injury cross-reference and no projection comparison on this card. Both are normally part of the process and neither was completed for this slate. That means no Projection Gap figure, so the three-signal test could not be run — today's card is Edge Gap plus the opponent-rank matchup layer only. Treat both legs as two-thirds checked.
Odds and lines move; everything above was recorded pregame and may differ by the time you read it. Always confirm your own price and that the player is active.
