The ranks we would have leaned on are computed with a player who may not play
Three of the four largest Edge Gaps on today's board come out of Las Vegas at Toronto, and all three are Unders priced against Las Vegas positional defensive ranks of 5th, 7th and 8th. Those ranks describe a Las Vegas defence that has A'ja Wilson in it. Wilson is listed as a game-time decision on today's injury report, along with guard Dana Evans.
This is the failure mode we wrote about a week ago in a different sport and a different building: a positional defensive ranking is a season-long average that silently assumes a full roster, and it stops describing tonight the moment the roster changes. On August 16 we rated a Caitlin Clark rebounding Under as Confirms against New York's third-ranked rebounding defence while New York was missing both starting forwards. Publishing an Isabelle Harrison Points+Rebounds Under into a Las Vegas front line that might not contain A'ja Wilson is the same mistake with a different name.
The other side of that game compounds it. Toronto is missing Marina Mabrey, Aneesah Morrow, Maria Conde, Nyara Sabally and Brittney Sykes, which is why Kiki Rice, Laura Juskaite and Isabelle Harrison all carry inflated usage and why the screen surfaced six separate legs on the three of them. Unders on players absorbing five absent teammates' minutes, gated on a defensive rank that may be missing its anchor, is not a bet we can size honestly. All six were dropped.
| Dropped leg | Edge Gap | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Kiki Rice U11.5 1H Pts+Reb+Ast | +27.7 | Largest edge on the board. Rated Confirms on a Las Vegas rank of 5th — and our lineup service projects her at 24.2 for the full game, roughly 12.1 in a half, on the wrong side of an 11.5 line. Two of three signals disagree |
| Caitlin Clark U4.5 Rebounds | +24.8 | Conflicts. Chicago is 15th — dead last — at defending rebounds from her position, and our lineup service projects her at 5.2. Clark is also a game-time decision |
| Isabelle Harrison U23.5 Points+Rebounds | +23.8 | Projection lands at 22.5 against a 23.5 line, which is on our side by one point. Removed on the Wilson question, not on the number |
| Awa Fam O4.5 Rebounds | +23.3 | Projection is 4.4 — the wrong side of the line for an Over |
| Ezi Magbegor U5.5 Rebounds | +21.7 | Projection is 5.9 — the wrong side of the line for an Under |
| Paige Bueckers U15.5 1H Pts+Reb+Ast | +21.1 | Seattle ranks 11th against her position: Conflicts, mildly. Projection agrees with us at 15.15, so the signals split |
| Laura Juskaite U1.5 Three Pointers | +19.3 | Projection agrees at 1.4 and the rank is Neutral. Removed on the Wilson question and on our two-legs-per-game cap |
| Shakira Austin O16.5 Points | +17.0 | Game-time decision (knee). We do not publish players who are not confirmed available |
| Megan DiLeo O18.5 Points+Rebounds | +16.2 | Conflicts — Washington ranks 2nd against her position, which is the worst possible backdrop for an Over |
| Kelsey Mitchell O24.5 Points | +15.6 | Rated Confirms on Chicago's 11th-ranked guard defence, but our lineup service projects 23.0 against a 24.5 line. See the note below |
Two legs, one game, and we are not pretending that is diversified
What survives is two legs, both from Seattle at Dallas. That is our per-game cap and it is also the entire card, which means a single blowout or a single rotation change hits both positions at once. We would rather say that plainly than pad the card to five with legs whose projection sits on the wrong side of the line.
Both legs lean on the same underlying fact: Seattle is 7-30 and Dallas is favoured by 8.5 with a total of 175.5, which is a script where Seattle's rotation gets short and the starters' counting stats get squeezed. That helps a rebounds-plus-assists Under and it helps a first-quarter points Under only indirectly, since blowout risk affects the fourth quarter rather than the first. Dominique Malonga's leg is therefore the weaker of the two and is flagged as such: first-quarter markets have the widest variance of anything we publish, and a 4.35 projection against a 4.5 line is a margin of fifteen hundredths of a point.
The strongest argument against our number one pick
Jade Melbourne Under 7.5 Rebounds+Assists is our highest-ranked surviving leg, and the case against it is that the projection barely clears and the assist half of it is the volatile half. our lineup service has her at 2.5 rebounds and 4.6 assists — 7.1 against a line of 7.5. That is a margin of four tenths of an assist. One extra kick-out that turns into a three and the leg is dead.
Worse, Natisha Hiedeman is out, and Hiedeman is a guard. Every minute of hers that goes to Melbourne is a minute of additional ball-handling, and ball-handling is how assists happen. The projection may already account for that; we cannot verify that it does. Our own Under is being bought in a rotation that just lost a guard, which is the wrong direction. And the L5 window on this leg is 60% — the weakest recent number of any leg we are publishing today — meaning she has already gone over this line twice in five games.
The counterweight is Dallas's ninth-ranked positional defence, a season rate of 78%, and a game script that should shorten Seattle's night. We think that is enough. We do not think it is comfortable.
